Creator Spotlight: Matthew Chen
Creator from 🇨🇦 Canada
Hi! Please, tell us something about yourself.
I’m a recent Industrial Design Grad from Canada. I got into 3D art and motion design as a hobby, but now I do it as a freelance job. I started making AR filters during the pandemic as personal stress reliever. I’m making filters for fun while I look for work.
How many effects have you created so far and for which platforms?
I currently have 12 live filters on Instagram.
Name the best effects you created and briefly describe them.
Bubbly will give the user heart bubbles that float around the face. If you have a friend, the second user gets a bubble wand that blows bubbles.
Little Wings has two chrome wings that flap along-side the user. This effect also has contour and highlights on the cheeks to give that ethereal effect.
Which platform for creating AR filters is your favourite and why?
Instagram is my platform of choice because i can interact with users the quickest.
What in your opinion makes an AR effect successful?
It needs to be simple and effective. People still want their faces shown in their stories. Filters can’t be blocking too much of the subject. Keep things simple and easy to garner more interactions.
