Creator Spotlight: Kyo

Creator from 🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Hi, Kyo. Please, tell us something about yourself.

I’m London based freelance graphic designer. I’ve been creating AR filters for about 1 year.

I used to work for a design agency in London right after I finished my design internship in Dazed. This design agency ripped me off by paying me 10% of the price of the entire project, (I didn’t know at that time but I realised it when the client accidentally contacted me) so I quitted this agency and I started freelance afterwards.

The general skills that I feel confident about besides AR filter design are Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and After Effects. I started working on Blender to make basic 3d models about 10months ago. I’m into Art and Fashion design so I’m mainly aiming to use this skill set for the art or fashion industry in the future!

How many effects have you created so far and for which platforms?

Instagram, 35+

Name the best three effects you created and briefly describe them.

These 3 filters below are my favourite filters as they represent my design style. My favourite filter of all is my old effect Iconic Nose Piercing. I think this effect represents my personality as I usually inject my personality into the things I make. I find this effect also special for me as it reflects the entire gamut of my interest—fashion and weird things.

Which platform for creating AR filters is your favourite and why?

Spark AR as Instagram is the only social media I’m regularly using at the moment.

What in your opinion makes an AR effect successful?

Trying to do your own thing — this doesn’t mean stop looking at other creators’ work, this means you must not limit yourself solely to the other creators’ work. Find your way, find your individuality that stands out. Do what you like, know which field of design you feel the most passionate about and dig it.
